Scaffolding originated from Shennong's practice of felling trees and building scaffolds to collect medicinal herbs. [5]  Additionally, it is also said that in 1911, F.B. Gilbreth conducted research on bricklaying, which led to the invention of scaffolding. [6] Early scaffolding was mainly made of bamboo and wood. In the early 20th century, the British invented the coupler-type steel pipe scaffolding. [10] In the 1930s, Switzerland invented an adjustable steel prop, which used a built-in screw mechanism to adjust the height of the steel prop, making it more precise and reliable than couplers, and it was widely used in concrete formwork support systems. In the 1960s, the connection method of coupler-type scaffolding was greatly improved. [10] Since the 1980s, China has made significant achievements in developing advanced and multi-functional scaffolding systems. After the 1990s, various new types of scaffolding were developed, such as pin-type scaffolding. [7] By 2013, there were more than one hundred professional scaffolding manufacturers in China.
